We’ve been saying it for months: the Mercedes-AMG® GT 63 S is an absolute performance animal, and now we have quantifiable proof of just how savage the GT 4-door really is.
Car and Driver magazine recently put the AMG® 4-door coupe up against other performance cars in its annual Lightning Lap performance comparison around Virginia International Raceway. The results were stunning.
The 2019 Mercedes-AMG® GT 63 S ran a four-door-record-setting 2:49.3, putting it nearly five seconds ahead of the BMW M5 Competition, and running more than half a second faster than the 2012 Ferrari 458 Italia.
Serious performance numbers come from serious engineering. The 630-horsepower biturbo V8 certainly helps move the 4600-lb sedan around any circuit, but the standard rear-axle steering of the S variant and the 63’s 315-section rear rubber keep it planted and lithe under the performance record’s requisite high-speed loads.
As news broke of the AMG® GT four-door’s record-setting performance, one luck owner commented online:
“I keep telling people it’s closer to GTC/R than it is to E 63 sedan/wagon.”
